Are you Saving Up?

So you're saving up for a real guitar.

How much have you spent on video games?

Playstation3 and Xbox 360 game prices are $40 to $70 for the latest games. $40 times 6 equals $240. WOW! $70 times 6 equals $420. Need I say more? Only 6 games? Who has only 6 video games? (I don’t know that person. Maybe they trade them in on new ones. That’s good discipline, but it still costs something.)

Buying a guitar should be the fun part. Saving up for one may not be.

I know a child who saved all their christmas and birthday money for 2 years. When asked during that time, what they wanted for either occasion, they replied “Money, I’m saving for a guitar. I think I need to save about $200. When I’m finished with the sport season, Mom said I could get one. But I have to finish my commitment in sports first.” That worked and I helped pick out that guitar when the time came to buy. Truth is, not all of us are that fortunate.

I overheard a child in a music store say she’d been tutoring others, to save up for her guitar. It was a subject she was great at and enjoyed. SMART!.

Once a friend and I were driving through a neighborhood on a hot summer day. There were kids at the corner selling lemonade and avocados. I could see that these products came from trees in their neighbors, and their own back yards. I just had to ask the little entrepreneurs, what they planned on doing with the money they earned. One said “Saving up to buy a bike.” The other said “I’m going to get a guitar.” Good for them! Business was booming and the hours were long. I saw them there everyday for 2 months.

If you want to play guitar for real, and there was a way you could earn or save $25 a month, could you “commit” to it for 10 months? The more you are earning or saving up each month, the faster the time goes by. It still takes commitment. It may take “imagination”. Come to think of it, so does learning to play guitar!

I’m starting to see a trend here. We need imagination and commitment. If you are stuck for ideas, ask someone for help. Their ideas should get yours to start rolling in.
