Let's Do Our Guitar Research First!!!
Do a little guitar research before you buy. Save time, money and frustration. You know cutting your fingernails are the first cost of guitar for real. Also, you've made the decision to learn how to change strings. You need to have a few questions answered. These will help you choose the "right" guitar, accessories, and help with lessons. Print this page if needed and answer these questions. Q 1. What type of music do you want to play? Choose a category. Category #1) Classical: This category can include Folk, or Latin music such as flamenco. Different types of music can use similar guitars. They have nylon stings. There is a little more to it than that. I want to keep things simple for now. Category #2) Singer-songwriter: Folk music, Country music, Church songs, some Pop, Easy listening. Category #3) Rock: Rock and roll, Metal, Surf music, most Pop. Q 2. Who are your 3 "favorite" guitarists? 1) 2) 3) If you know which 1 of the 3 types of guitars they play most often this can help you choose what type would be best for you. Based on the answer above, which category do they fall into? 1, 2 or 3? (What kind of music do they play?) Q 3. Where will you want to play most often? The answer can help you see what you might need. For example: If I like playing on the beach, in church, and in the park, I'll choose Acoustic/electric. It will fit. Another example: If I want to play in church and I want to have a rock sound sometimes, I'll choose Electric. These are all guitar research questions to ask yourself or whomever you may be buying for. If you are buying for someone else it is a good idea to have them answer these first. You don't want get the wrong guitar and end up with a dust collector. See how a little research can effect the desired out come? Free Bonus Fact: I have no idea where the notion of starting with an acoustic then switching to electric later came from. This does not make sense to me. I see no logical benefit. I believe electrics are easier to play. Forcing a rocker to play on an acoustic, isn't rock. Your chances of "really learning" are better if you play the type of guitar that can make the sound you like most often. It will inspire you when you need it the most. Avoid the frustration of this costly mistake. These questions lead us to choose from 3 basic types of guitars.
