What About Guitar Lessons?
Guitar lessons are available everywhere. From Books, Internet, Magazines and Dvds. FACT 1: One reality about playing guitar is you never master it all. There is always something you can do better. There's always something "new" to discover. FACT 1: You need feedback. Consider all the above reference material. I always learned more, and faster, with someone sitting with me, giving feedback and personal direction. Nothing compares to someone who understands your pace, and the way you learn. They can teach you either by hearing, by seeing, or by feeling. They should teach you the way you learn fastest. They can spot what you need to improve upon, in an instant MAGAZINES: Some costing $6 to $15, now include CD’s with Video Lessons on them. This is a great deal for the amount of information you get. They include songs and interviews with pros. They’ll have reviews of the latest gear. Guitar magazines can be very inspiring. Buying a stack of used or old ones is a good investment, so keep an eye out for them. BOOKS: At $15 on up to $70. There a lot of books out there, not all are correct or useful. I had bought one for $20 once and learned everything in it, only to discover later, it was completely wrong. I guess no one checked out the accuracy of the information. They just edited it. I recommend someone with experience give you advice before you buy. Why? They cost a lot when new. On the other hand, used book stores can be great! CD’s and DVD instructional courses: cost $40 or more. Some even hundreds! Same thing here, I would make sure they are recommended by an experienced teacher or player. They can be expensive. I rented one that ended up being totally over my head and out of my league. I lost only 5 bucks instead of $50. That was a good guitar lesson. The Internet: The cost is your time, and not everything is free anymore. There's a ton of information out here. Accuracy can be a problem. Be respectful of copyrights! If your goal is to write your own songs, you probably wouldn’t want someone stealing food from your table. Remember the golden rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The Internet is probably the most useful tool if you have the time and knowhow to surf for what you want. I’ll bet you could get personal lessons via the internet with today’s cameras and technology. It might cost, but it might be convenient if you live far away from a good teacher. With everyone pressed for time and the price of gas going up. Oh, and the stress of running around town in traffic. It starts to sound pretty good. Don’t waste too much time surfing if you’d rather be playing, or should be practicing. Find what you need and print it. Turn off the computer and have fun playing guitar. Better yet, go play outside somewhere. Inspiration is out there. GROUP AND PRIVATE ONE ON ONE GUITAR LESSONS: Prices vary. Usually you sign up for half hour or hour long lessons. As I said before, you get bang for the buck, especially if you are a beginner. It is better to be “guided” than out on your own. You may develop bad habits that will be harder to break later. I mean hard to break. You might not even know you have bad habits. Read my story about the
“Best five minute lesson I ever had”.
I had read that famous rock guitarist Randy Rhoads, who played for Ozzy, used to look through the phone book for teachers whenever he came into a new town on tour. He was usually teaching the teachers, but he kept trying to find someone to learn from anyway. What does that tell you? He eventually wanted to go back to college to get a degree in music. Even as great as he was, he knew “there's always something to discover”. What I provide on this site going forward, is to be viewed as just reference material. Find some good reference material!
