The Best Five Minute Lesson I Ever Had!
Have you ever had a five minute lesson? After 20 years of playing, I came to a friend’s music store. He owns the store “ The Music Lab”. He and his brother have their own band. He also has many professional credits to his name. He’s played on albums and promoted concerts for charities where thousands of people show up. He hadn’t heard, nor seen me play before. He asked me to “play a few licks” for him while he sat and watched. So I did. I played what I thought showed my personal style at it's best. After only a few minutes, he stopped me. He pointed out all my weaknesses. And he was right. I mean dead on correct. There was no way I could argue with him. I had no idea I was making these little noises and not playing clean! That I was slowing down on ascending runs. Smack to my ego? You bet. I’ve been playing 20 years! I just knew I had a bit of work ahead of me to accomplish his suggestions. One guitar lesson: Free. Months of practice learning what he taught me: Hard, but it was worth it. I still think about what he said to me every time I sit down to practice. Thanks Vic.
