Classical Guitar Information and Pictures

Here's is what a classical guitar normally looks like. They will have nylon strings and some may be wrapped with different metals. The fingerboard and the neck on these guitars are wider than our 2 other types. (Electric and acoustic/electric)

A True Classical Guitar

1) These take a bit more strength and precision to play.

2) Small fingers can work well on these when playing just notes.

3) Bar chords can be very hard on small hands. My daughter's hands are small and she has a hard time. Mine are average and even I have a hard time.

Now, I've seen players with different size hands play these. The one thing I know is these guitars really take hours of practice to make them sound right. You'll want to have a lot of time available for practice in order to succeed.

Classical Guitar Strings at the Bridge

4) Keeping these in tune is tricky. They must be strung properly and tuning checked often. I still have to re tune mine every day I play it. Cool thing is the strings can last a long time if you take care of them and have set them up right to begin with. Remember you'll have to learn how to change strings! These are different because you tie the strings around themselves.

5) Good News! You can keep the fingernails on your picking hand long. Bad News: Your nails on the other hand that does the chords, must be short. (see the facts on home page)

Classical Guitar Tuners

FUN FACTS:

Some people will play classical guitars to make other kinds of music. They just like the sound and feel of nylon strings. They tend to feel a little softer than all the others.

I just saw top country singer songwriter Willie Nelson on TV and he always has one. In fact, he's played this guitar so much, he's strummed right through the wood on the top. I've seen quite a few country videos lately where they'll play these guitars.

I've seen many Mariachi players master these as well for their latin style music. Talk about fun music to play! They'll each use nylon string guitars of different sizes and shapes. Some even use acoustics with steel strings, others may even use mandolins. They even have large ones to be able to play low bass notes. The clothes they wear are cool too!

Strap on a classical guitar and you, and the band, can walk and play almost anywhere.
